Goodfellows

2010 Huron Township Rotary / Goodfellows at Huron High School basket building with about 200 local volunteers.

For over the last 15 years the Huron Township Rotary Club has taken on the task of also being the Huron Township Goodfellows.  Each year it seams that the need gets larger for the amount of people in our community that needs assistance during the Holidays.  Children with out warm clothing, families with out enough food to eat, and most of all children that would not have gifts at Christmas.  The Huron Township Rotary has taken on the task and become the Huron Township Goodfellows.  But they could not do this alone,  there need is to great for a small club of about 25 member to handle on its own.  So they took their talents of doing a lot with a little to the local schools and recruited kids to do hat and mitten drives, canned food drives and most of all help putting it all together.  The school kids responded but not alone,  many of the parents had to come to see what all of the kids were talking about.  You see the kids were talking for months after the events about how much fun they were having giving back to the community and their fellow classmates and neighbors that needed a little help.  Some were kids, some were adults and some were seniors.  The parents came and pitched in also.  This past year over a 3 day period over 500 volunteers came together some battling the cold standing on a street corner selling the Goodfellow papers for donations.  Other collecting  canned goods,  hats, mittens or toys.  Then on that cold weekend in December when they could all stay in their warm beds.  They all got early and met at Huron High School to organize and build food and toy baskets for over 170 families and 360 kids.  Now these families would have a large box of food, a turkey, bag of potatoes, bag of apples and a gift certificate for other needed items at the local market.  But most of all the kids in those families would wake up Christmas with gifts under the Christmas tree.  Because our moto is   "NO CHILD WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS."

The masterminds behind the wonderful program are Linda Burke and Helena Lilly.  They do not do all of the work but they know how to get it done.  They know how to get people to volunteer and feel good about it, so much so every wants to come back next year and help again.  You see when there is a lot of work to do and only a few to do it,  it is a lot of work.  But when there is a lot of work to do and hundreds of people to do it, nobody works hard and all find out that there is JOY in giving back.

Thanks for everything, and God Bless you.
